GM Recalls 462,000 Diesel Pickups & SUVs Due to Rear Wheel Lock-Up from Transmission Valve Failure

General Motors (GM) has issued a recall for certain diesel-powered full-size trucks and SUVs due to a potential issue with the transmission control valve. A defective valve could fail, leading to rear-wheel lockup and significantly increasing the risk of a crash.

The recall affects 461,839 diesel-powered vehicles from the 2020 to 2022 model years. Specifically, it includes the 2020–2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, 2500HD, and 3500HD pickup trucks, along with their GMC Sierra counterparts—the 1500, 2500HD, and 3500HD. Additionally, GM’s full-size SUVs from the 2021 model year are also impacted, including the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, GMC Yukon and Yukon XL, and Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, all equipped with the Duramax 3.0-liter inline-six diesel engine.

In its NHTSA filing, GM explains that the transmission control valve in certain vehicles may wear down over time, leading to a gradual loss of pressure. This can result in harsh shifting and, in rare cases, may cause the rear wheels to momentarily lock up.

To fix the issue, owners will need to take their vehicles to a dealership, where technicians will install updated software for the transmission control module. GM has announced a special coverage program, ensuring the repair is performed at no cost. Affected owners will receive notification by mail starting December 9, 2024.

The recall has been officially filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA ID: 24V797000).
