Hyundai Motor America has issued a major safety recall affecting more than 100,000 Genesis vehicles due to a defect that could lead to dangerous fuel leaks and increase the risk of an engine compartment fire.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the recall impacts several popular Genesis sedans and SUVs across multiple model years.

Affected Vehicles

The recall (NHTSA Campaign No. 26V229) includes the following models:

Model Model Years Approx. Units Affected
Genesis G90 2023–2025 4,231
Genesis G80 2021–2025 7,195
Genesis GV80 2021–2025 57,229
Genesis GV70 2022–2026 26,105

These vehicles were manufactured between July 2020 and early 2026 and sold throughout the United States.

What Is the Problem?

The issue stems from a crossover fuel pipe that connects the engine’s fuel rails.

  • The pipe may have been installed with improperly secured retention fasteners
  • Over time, these fasteners can loosen
  • This can allow fuel to leak into the engine compartment

The root cause was traced to insufficient torque stabilizer applied during assembly, reducing the long-term holding strength of the connections.

Safety Risks

A fuel leak is more than just a mechanical issue—it can be extremely dangerous. Potential hazards include:

  • Fuel odors inside or around the vehicle
  • Fuel leakage in the engine bay
  • Increased risk of fire

The NHTSA warns that leaking fuel near hot engine components significantly raises the risk of an engine compartment fire, even if no incidents have been reported yet.

Warning Signs to Watch For

Drivers of affected Genesis vehicles should be alert for:

  • Strong gasoline smell
  • Visible signs of fuel leakage
  • Unusual engine bay odors after driving

If you notice any of these symptoms, it’s important to stop driving the vehicle and seek service immediately.

Recall Timeline & Investigation

According to federal safety filings:

  • July 2024: Initial reports of fuel odor and leaks
  • January 2025: Formal investigation launched
  • 2025–early 2026: Ongoing testing and data review
  • April 2, 2026: Recall officially approved

In total, Hyundai received 129 reports related to the issue in the U.S., though no crashes, fires, or injuries have been confirmed to date.

Remedy: What Owners Should Do

Genesis is offering a free repair for all affected vehicles. The fix includes:

  • Inspection of the crossover fuel pipe
  • Retightening connections to proper specifications
  • Replacement of the pipe if a leak is detected

Owners will be notified by mail starting June 8, 2026, and repairs will be performed at authorized Genesis dealerships at no cost.

In the meantime, some vehicles may be advised to park outside and avoid driving until inspected.

Your Legal Rights Under Lemon Law

If your Genesis vehicle has experienced repeated fuel system issues, you may have rights under your state’s lemon law.

A vehicle may qualify as a lemon if:

  • The defect substantially affects safety or value
  • The manufacturer cannot fix the issue after multiple attempts
  • The problem occurs within the warranty period

Fuel leaks and fire risks are considered serious safety defects, which can strengthen a lemon law claim.
