Ford has announced a safety recall affecting more than 272,000 vehicles after discovering a defect that may prevent certain models from properly staying in PARK, potentially allowing them to roll away.

Ford is urging affected owners to engage the electronic parking brake every time the vehicle is parked as an added safety precaution until repairs are completed.

Vehicles Included in the Recall

The recall applies to the following models and model years:

  • Ford F-150 Lightning (2022–2026)
  • Ford Mustang Mach-E (2024–2026)
  • Ford Maverick (2025–2026)

What’s Causing the Issue?

According to Ford, the problem stems from the vehicle’s PARK module, which may fail to fully lock into the PARK position when the driver shifts into PARK. If this occurs, the vehicle could move unexpectedly.

The issue was first identified at a Ford assembly plant after engineers were unable to engage PARK on a Mustang Mach-E. During diagnostics, trouble code P07E4-00 was triggered.

Ford’s engineers explained the issue as follows:

“Binding of the vehicle’s IPM pawl against the IPM slider component may impede the slider from returning to its fully engaged park position. This binding may occur due to higher coefficients of friction between the pawl and slider resulting from variations in the manufacturing process and/or materials in conjunction with the design of the interface.”

Federal Safety Standards Violation

The potential rollaway condition violates federal motor vehicle safety standards, which require that:

“When tested in accordance with S6.2.2, each vehicle must not move more than 150 mm on a 10 percent grade when the gear selection control is locked in ‘park.’”

Warning Signs Drivers May Notice

If the issue occurs, drivers may see:

  • A wrench warning light
  • A shift system fault message on the instrument cluster
  • No illuminated gear indicator (the “P” may not appear)

Warranty Claims & Safety Impact

As of November 24, Ford reported:

  • 22 warranty claims involving Ford Mustang Mach-E
  • 4 warranty claims involving Ford Maverick
  • 16 warranty claims involving Ford F-150 Lightning

These claims reference diagnostic code P07E4-00. However, Ford notes that this code can be triggered by multiple conditions, and the claims cannot be definitively linked to the defect at this time.

Importantly, Ford reports no crashes or injuries associated with the issue.

Repair Timeline & Next Steps

Ford has issued approximately 150 safety recalls in 2025, which has slowed repair timelines across its dealer network. As a result:

  • Interim recall letters will be mailed in early 2026
  • Follow-up letters will be sent once dealers are ready to perform repairs

The fix will involve a park module software update, which will be delivered either:

  • Over-the-air (OTA), or
  • Through a Ford dealership
