General Motors has identified a safety-related defect in certain 2020–2024 Chevrolet Silverado Heavy Duty (2500/3500 series) and GMC Sierra Heavy Duty (2500/3500 series) trucks equipped with power-unlatching tailgates.
Under specific conditions, water may enter the tailgate and reach the electronic gate-release switch, potentially causing a short circuit. This could result in the tailgate unlatching unexpectedly while the vehicle is in Park. If the driver does not manually secure the tailgate before driving, cargo in the truck bed could fall out, posing a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash. Until the recall is completed, owners are advised to ensure the tailgate is fully closed and latched before driving.
In February 2024, the recall targeted a safety concern in 323,232 Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD trucks due to the risk of unexpected tailgate openings. The recall has now been expanded to include an additional 132,037 vehicles from the 2024 model year.
According to Safety Recall N232426400 from NHTSA:
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied.
Vehicles involved in this recall were placed on stop delivery February 1, 2024. Once the service procedure contained in this bulletin has been performed on the vehicle, the vehicle is released from stop delivery and the vehicle can be delivered to the customer.
The vehicles that had the liftgate exterior release switch assembly disabled in this Safety Recall have been moved to Customer Satisfaction Program N232426401, to have the disabled liftgate exterior release switch assembly replaced.
All involved vehicles that are in dealer inventory must be held and not delivered to customers, dealer traded, or used for demonstration purposes until the repair contained in this bulletin has been performed on the vehicle.
Please note: The 2020-2023 model year Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 VINs are for Canada only. These VINs are equipped with RPO Z49 (Canadian Base Equipment).
