Chevrolet Bolt Battery Recall

GM has recalled all 2017 through 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EVs and all 2022 Chevrolet Bolt EUVs. These vehicles suffer from two battery defects that result in a risk of fire. The recall applies to all Bolt vehicles, including those that may have received an earlier recall repair for the fire risk issue.

The first defect is a torn anode tab, which is the piece of the negative electrode that allows the cell to be wired into a group of cells (called a module) and then into full battery pack. The second defect is a folded separator, which is the thin sheet of material (typically a nonwoven polymer) separating the anode and cathode.

As GM continues to build replacement battery modules, they have informed Chevrolet Bolt drivers of software update that will allow owners to remove the parking and overnight charging limitations on their vehicles. The software update, which automatically sets the maximum charge state to 80 percent, will allow owners to resume:

  • Charging indoors overnight
  • Parking indoors after charging
  • Operating under 70 miles of range (greater overall vehicle range compared to the prior charge limitation guidance)

Additional information is available on GM’s Chevrolet Bolt EV and Bolt EUV Recall Website.
